Genome refers to the complete set of genetic information possessed by an
organism. Genomics is the study of genome sequence, structure and function.
The fundamental strategies in this study are to expand the scope of biological
investigation from studying genes or proteins in isolation to study all genes or
proteins in an integrated and systematic fashion. This study involves high
throughput of large scale experimental methodologies combined with statistical
and computational analysis of the results. Novel techniques like automated
sequences and microarrays now accomplish assessment of the levels of _expression
of thousands of genes in cells and provide insights into disease development and
identification of the causative genes.
CENTRE FOR EXCELLENCE IN GENOMIC SCIENCES
Recently the
University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi has accorded the status of
“University with Potential for Excellence in the subject of Genomic Sciences” to
the Madurai Kamaraj University. This recognition was given in recognition of the
strength and achievements of the Schools of Biological Sciences and
Biotechnology, Madurai Kamaraj University in this area. The School of Biological
Sciences is offering an M.Sc course in Genomics from the Academic year
2002-2003. University Grants Commission is providing necessary financial
support and manpower to help the University to achieve and sustain quality
education and research. MKU’s Genomic Sciences programme will focus on several
specific areas such as Human Genomics, Plant Genomics, Microbial Genomics and
Structural Genomics.
Basic courses
such as Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Genetics, Genetic
Engineering and Biotechnology will be covered in the first two semesters.
Advanced level courses like Pharmacogenomics, Functional Genomics, Proteomics,
Bioinformatics, Human Genomics and a Genomics related project work will be
covered in the third and fourth semesters
